The influence of casting process on the integrity of titanium castings

Due to titanium's poor castability, the gating system design for investment casting of titanium is particularly critical. Vertical gating methods used for cobalt-chromium alloys and stainless steel often result in incomplete casting.

Due to the poor castability of titanium, the design of the gating system for titanium investment casting is particularly important. If the gating system is designed vertically, as is common for cobalt-chromium alloys and stainless steel, incomplete casting often occurs. The gating system for titanium investment casting has the following requirements:
The gate diameter should be large (no less than 4 mm) and short, ensuring that a sufficient amount of titanium melt flows through the shortest path into the mold cavity; the connection between the gate and the investment mold should be appropriately thickened; the number of gates should be 3-4; parallel insertion or lateral insertion can be used; avoid forming right angles.
Influence of mold temperature on the surface properties of titanium castings
The contamination of titanium melt by the embedding material is related not only to the vacuum degree of the melting chamber and the composition of the embedding material, but also to the mold temperature. At high mold temperatures, the titanium melt is prone to react with the embedding material, and elements such as Zr, Al, and Si easily diffuse into the titanium matrix as interstitial elements, forming a thicker hardened layer, thereby increasing the tensile strength and yield strength of the casting, reducing ductility, and increasing brittleness. Among them, the increase in oxygen content has the most significant effect on the change in the mechanical properties of the casting. At low mold temperatures, the hardened layer also becomes thinner. However, low mold temperatures affect the fluidity, so the mold temperature should be appropriately selected, and sometimes the mold temperature should be determined according to different purposes.
